Media coverage in the past few weeks would certainly have us believing it is. Just this past weekend:
- A group of Belgian tourists were taken hostage in Guatemala on Friday, prompting a travel warning from the Canadian government.
- A Swedish tourist was murdered in broad daylight on the Thai island of Phuket on Saturday.
- On Sunday, a German tourist came forward about another assault in Goa (the fifth incident so far this year). This case follows on the heals of Scarlette Keeling's widely reported and debated murder (and subsequent attempted cover-up).
I suspect I know the answer, but the question warrants further investigation before I attempt to define one. For the moment, I'd like to pose the following question: Is it getting more dangerous out there, or is the media hype unnecessarily scaring away tourists?
Your thoughts?
